Questions families bring to the first call
Who can adopt a child?
The rules differ by state and by kind of adoption. Stepparents, partners, relatives and foster parents each have a path. Tell us your situation on the free call and we'll say which applies.
Do both parents have to sign?
Usually every legal parent consents, or the court ends their rights first. We find out who the legal parents are before we draft anything.
Is a stepparent adoption permanent?
Yes. After the decree, the stepparent is the child's legal parent in every way, and that does not undo itself.
Can unmarried partners adopt together?
Often. It depends on the court and the kind of adoption, and we tell you what yours expects.
What is a home study, and who pays?
A licensed social worker visits, interviews the family and writes a report for the court. The social worker charges directly; it is not part of our flat fee.
Will the other parent be told?
Where the law requires notice, yes, and we handle it the way the court requires. We explain what that looks like before we send anything.
What if I live outside the state?
We represent families in this state's courts. If your court is elsewhere, we say so on the call and point you to the right kind of lawyer.
How do I know which fee is mine?
You describe your family, and we tell you. If it fits none of our four, we say that too, and we don't charge for the call.
What happens to what I tell you?
It stays in your file. We don't share it, and we don't ask you to send anything private before we have spoken.
Something we missed?
Ask it on a free twenty-minute call, by video.
The first call is free. Court filing fees, home studies, background checks and any agency or clinic charges are separate, and we list each one beside your fee.
